ABOUT POI+
Poi+ is a movement-based programme designed to create connection & confidence through culture.
Guided by Te Whare Tapa Whā, a Māori holistic health model that views wellbeing as a four-walled wharenui (meeting house), Poi+ supports participants’ physical, mental, social, and spiritual wellbeing in a balanced and inclusive way.
Taha tinana (physical wellbeing):
Supporting coordination and movement through gentle, accessible breakout activities.
Taha hinengaro (mental wellbeing):
Encouraging calm and focus through concentration in a fun, culturally grounded way.
Taha whānau (social wellbeing):
Building connection by working together, supporting one another, and fostering whakawhanaungatanga.
Taha wairua (spiritual wellbeing):
Grounding sessions in cultural roots and tikanga Māori to create meaning and purpose.
Who's Behind Poi+
Joe Patuki (Tainui, Ngāpuhi) studied for a bachelor's in Sport and Recreation, majoring in Sport Management. He is a graduate from AUT and an experienced youth sports coach who has worked across a range of sports, including athletic development, rugby, tag. Alongside running youth sport holiday programmes.
Through his coaching, Joe gained firsthand insight into how traditional sport environments can unintentionally exclude some children.
